In collaboration with The Milgis Trust, the MEAK eye and dental teams travelled 500km from Nairobi to Ngurunit to treat people in this remote, semi-arid area.
The team of 13 medical professionals, including an ophthalmologist, two cataract surgeons, nurses and a dentist saw over 3,500 patients, demonstrating how medical help is desperately needed in these isolated regions.
2,800 eye patients were seen, resulting in:
- 228 patients having cataract surgery to restore sight,
- 13 procedures to relieve trachoma, and
- 4 to remove foreign bodies in the eyes.
Over 500 pairs of ‘easyreader’ glasses were dispensed together with 250 pairs of sunglasses. More than 2,000 bottles of vitamin and antibiotic eye drops were dispensed as part of post-operative care and eye infection prevention measures.
The dental team were also extremely busy examining and carrying out procedures on 756 people to relieve the suffering of dental pain.
A huge thanks to the MEAK team, including MEAK Trustees Dee Belliere and Beverly Orthwein (who took this photo) and The Milgis Trust for such a successful mission.
