At the request of local MP, the Hon. Mary Emaase Otucho, the MEAK eye and dental teams travelled 450km from Nairobi to Busia to treat an estimated 300 people who had been identified as needing ophthalmic services.
The MEAK team of medical professionals from the Lions’ Sight First Eye Hospital in Nairobi, reviewed 3,200 eye patients, resulting in 308 surgical procedures, including 303 patients having cataract surgery to restore sight
Over 700 pairs of reading glasses were distributed, together with over 100 pairs of sunglasses and 40 pairs with photochromatic lenses. This was in addition to the dispensing of pain relief medication, vitamin and antibiotic eye drops, provided as part of post-operative care and eye infection prevention measures.
The dental team reviewed 1005 patients, performing tooth extractions, fillings, root canal treatment, scaling and cleaning and dispensing dental medication
Despite this huge amount of work, there were still nearly 100 patients who could not be seen on this trip, and another trip was planned for January 2026, to treat the remaining patients, such is the demand for care
As always, MEAK are hugely grateful to their local collaborators from government and the Alupe Sub-County Hospital who advertised and help facilitate the mission
